 POWERBOX

V-Tech’s much vaunted ‘Powerbox’ range literally ‘plugs and plays’ into the standard wiring loom in seconds, to provide a useful increase in horsepower and torque. Already approved as OEM fitment on Polish VAG and Saab cars, V-Tech believe these units are quickly becoming the darling of the aftermarket.
The latest releases cover the Golf Mk5 and New Passat 2.0 litre models. Taking the Golf from 150bhp to 170bhp and more usefully from 220Nm of torque up to 265. Meanwhile the Passat  enjoys a hike from 140bhp up to 160bhp and a walloping 370Nm of torque from 320. There are also now systems for the BMW E46 and E60/E61 3.0 litre models. Taking the 3-series from 204bhp to 234 bhp and from 410Nm of torque up to 460, while the 5 series enjoys a hike from 231bhp up to 261 and an impressive 570Nm of torque from 520.
Each box has 9 easily switchable maps allowing the driver to pre-select the level of tune they wish to achieve. Obviously, the bigger numbers mean higher outputs, yet on most maps, economy is barely affected. Most drivers settle somewhere in the middle for the best of both Worlds. The box is also easily removable to prevent any warranty or resale issues.
On the horizon for gadget geeks are the bluetooth modules that sync the units to your phone or PDA, allowing an autonomous switch to your pre-selected map as you enter the car and reverting to standard as you leave. Great for valet parking or when leaving the car with your better half, perhaps?
With prices starting from just £299 including VAT and free fitting at V-Tech UK’s Midland HQ, expect to see a lot of quick oil-burning Veedubs and Beemers on our roads over the next few months!
